Column: Safety in Numbers for Cyclists

I have been thinking about getting a bike to ride with my wife and kids as well as do more short triathalons. Safety is one concern that I have because drivers do not pay attention and most do not want to share the road.  According to this article, studies in Canada and Australia show that drivers are at fault in 80 percent to 90 percent of bike accidents, with failure to yield right-of-way, sideswipes and door openings causing the majority of incidents.  The US apparently does not keep up with this data.  It’s not the bikers causing these accidents but rather inattentive drivers.
