Tractor trailer crashes into commercial vehicle in Villa Rica. Last week, a tractor trailer driver was heading Westbound on Interstate-20 in Villa Rica, Georgia when he encountered a parked truck on the side of the road. The driver was attempting to pull into the exit lane so he could take exit 24 off the highway. When he pulled into the gore, he smashed into the back of a tractor trailer parked on the shoulder.
The gore is the striped part of the road between the regular traffic lanes and the exit. This part of the road is designed to purposely slow down drivers. Apparently, the man in the second truck had pulled off to the side of the road to take a nap. The officers at the scene reported that he was asleep in the rear compartment at the time of the collision.
The truck hit the back of the 18-wheeler so hard that it caused the tractor trailer to separate. The driver ended up trapped between the cab and the trailer sections of the truck. Rescue crews had to pry him out of there. He was flown immediately to Grady Memorial Hospital.
Initially, reports had said that the driver of the tractor trailer had died as a result of his injuries. However, we have since learned that this report was wrong. The driver is expected to survive his injuries. There is no detailed update on the condition of the trucker who was sleeping in the back of the truck.
The injured man was driving a truck full of boxes of brake rotors. After the crash, the rotors spilled all over Interstate-20. Local authorities had to shut down the highway to clean up the debris and the rotors.
