A woman lost her life in a fatal tractor trailer crash on I-16 in Chatham County on Thursday, January 28. The accident involved a collision between two tractor trailers. Authorities identified the deceased victim as Antoinette L. Dardy, 35, from Savannah, GA.

According to the details shared by the Georgia State Patrol, both vehicles involved in the incident were traveling in the eastbound lanes of the I-16 when the crash occurred. The two tractor trailers were headed east in the right lane of the roadway.

As both vehicles reached the mile marker 151, the tractor trailer traveling behind rear ended the one traveling in front of it. It isn’t clear exactly how or why the rear-end collision occurred. It is possible that the tractor trailer in the front suddenly slowed down, or the driver of the vehicle in the rear got distracted for some reason.

The rear-end collision caused fatal injuries to Dardy who was driving the tractor trailer traveling in the rear. As first responders and paramedics reached the scene of the crash, attempts to revive Dardy failed. She was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash.

A number of local and state agencies responded to the scene of the tractor trailer crash on I-16. These included the Georgia Department of Transportation and GSP Post 42 Rincon. Following the incident, the eastbound lanes of the I-16 were closed to traffic. The lanes remained closed for nearly six hours from 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. as on-site investigation and cleanup was conducted.

The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team joined hands with GSP in investigating the crash scene. Further investigations about the incident may reveal precisely what caused the crash in the first place. Authorities are yet to identify the other driver involved in the incident.
