A police officer sustained injuries in a hit-and-run accident in Duluth over the weekend. The incident occurred early on the morning of Saturday, August 7. It was reported to the authorities just after 4:30 a.m.

According to the details shared by the police, the accident in Duluth which led to the officer’s injuries happened at the intersection of the Abbotts Bridge Road and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard intersection. The hit-and-run vehicle was identified by the authorities as a Ram 3500 pickup.

The officer involved in the crash was crossing the intersection in his patrol vehicle at the time. Just then, the driver of the pickup ran a red light and crashed into the patrol vehicle at a high rate of speed. The sheer impact of the collision caused significant damage to the patrol vehicle.

The officer suffered serious injuries in the collision. He had to be extricated from the vehicle by the local EMS and fire services personnel before he could be rushed to a local hospital. Duluth police identified the injured officer as Officer Ricky Porter. He was still reported to be at the hospital as of Monday, August 9 although his condition is reported as stable.

The driver of the Ram pickup truck fled the scene of the accident following the collision. He abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Duluth police was able to locate the driver following a brief search. He was identified as Eduardo Gutierrez, 30, of Americus.

A number of charges have been brought against Gutierrez in connection with the hit-and-run crash. These include reckless driving, hit-and-run, driving under influence, serious injury by vehicle, and failure to obey a traffic device.
